Print FAQs

Q
01) The printer says there's a jam, but when I open the
printer to clear it, there's no paper there.
A
In this case, the printer is not able to pull paper from the
tray. It register's as a paper jam, because the leading edge
of the paper does not reach a particular sensor within a
certain amount of time (usually one or two seconds) after
the 'pick up' rollers begin to turn.

Corrective Measures:

Clean the feed rollers.
  • Pull the paper tray out. If you don't have an actual cassette, pull the paper out of the tray
  • Examine the rollers. Sometimes there are three sets of roller; sometimes there is only one set. If there are three set of rollers, two of the sets should rub against each other when the paper tray is closed. Clean each roller that you can find with a damp soapy rag. If you have to turn the rollers in order to clean them, be careful and turn them slowly. Never force them. Sometimes you might have to turn the machine on, put a single piece of paper in the tray, start a print or copy so that the machine turns the rollers for you, and turn the machine off while the rollers are in the desired position.
  • Another way to clean the rollers is to take a single sheet of paper, and wet it with rubbing alcohol mixed with soap. Put the paper in the paper tray, and try to make a print, but hold on to the paper so that the machine doesn't pull it through. Do this several times (you will have to clear the jam each time) and then discard the paper (you should see some dark marks on the paper where the rollers rubbed against it.)
  • This is a temporary fix. If it works, then you will need to replace your feed rollers soon. Place a call at Cincinnati Printer Repair
Check the paper tray.
  • If the printer has only one set of rollers, then there are probably a couple of metal tabs on the paper tray. They would be located at the very edge of the tray, just where the paper would leave the tray.
  • Make sure that: 1) The paper's edge is beneath these tabs. The tabs should hold the paper down. 2) The tabs are straight, and not pointing up or down.
Are the rollers turning?
  • If you've cleaned the feed rollers, and you still can't print, it may be because the feed rollers are not turning. This might be because there is a broken part, or because the machine doesn't see the paper in the tray.
  • If possible, put a single sheet of paper in the tray, and see if you can watch the roller/rollers while the machine tries to print. If they are not, Place a call at Cincinnati Printer Repair

Q
03) The paper stops just before it reaches the printer
cartridge, or halfway through the printer.
A
There are two reasons that this could happen: 1) The printer
stops carrying the paper through, in which case, the paper
will not be crinkled at all. 2) The paper is getting caught on
something, in which case it would be crinkled or creased
(even torn.)

Corrective Measures:

If the paper is not crinkled at all.
  • Make sure that your printer lids, doors, etc., are able to close all the way. If something is blocking it, rollers might not be able to engage properly.
  • Make sure that the printer cartridge is seated properly.
  • Check all of your sensors. Throughout your printer, there should be small, black, plastic 'flags' that stick up here and there. The paper rubs against them, and moves them. The other end of these flags block sensors, letting the printer know when paper is present. The flags should move freely. You should be able to easily push it down, and have it pop back up again. If it looks like one is missing, Place a call at Cincinnati Printer Repair
If the paper is crinkled or creased.
  • The first and most obvious solution is to check the paper path for any obstructions. Also, make sure that there are no pieces of paper left over from previous jams. They can wad up, and hide between rollers or plates.
  • Again, check all of the sensors. If a flag is stuck up, and the paper cannot pass through, try to see if you can 'click' the flag back into place. BUT BE CAREFUL!!! Sensor flags break easily. If one is broken, Place a call at Cincinnati Printer Repair

Q
04) The paper jams just as it comes out of the printer, or
right near the 'fuser unit'. The fuser unit is the part inside
the printer that get's hot.

  • If the paper jams inside the fuser unit (ie. if half of the paper is sticking out of the fuser entrance, and nothing comes out the other side), the fuser unit should probably be replaced. Place a call at Cincinnati Printer Repair
