m477 errorMachines Affected: M477 - M377 - M452 with 59:F0 Error Code

I've written extensively on the 59.F0 error that comes up with some of the mid volume Color Laserjets.  Generally, you're looking at a big job--replacing or repairing the fuser drive assembly.  You can see what's been said HERE.

But the machines addressed in this article are small volume machines, and the problem is a different sort of beast.  As with the other machines, the error refers to the ITB (Intermediate Transfer Belt).  For a while, the fix was to simply replace it... which is ludicrous considering the new part is almost as expensive as a new machine.  But unlike the other machines, the error is not caused by a mechanical malfunction.  In fact, all it takes is a firmware upgrade to solve it.

If your machine has a USB port in front, you're lucky.  If not, you should probably find someone who understands computers to upgrade the firmware for you.

First, you need the firmware file.  You can download it from a Dropbox HERE.  Then follow these directions:

  1. Put the file in the root of a USB drive.
  2. Insert the thumb drive into your printer's USB port in the front.
  3. Touch the "home" button on the printer's control panel.
  4. Select "USB" on the printer's control panel.
  5. Select "Print Documents" on the printer's control panel.
  6. Select the file, which you downloaded and saved to the USB drive.
  7. You should see a screen that says "Printing Started."
  8. Then you'll see a screen asking if you want to print another file.  Select "No."
  9. If you had a persistent 59.f0 error, the screen will go back to that.  Don't turn the printer off.  You have to wait for the firmware to upgrade, which is happening in the background.  It should take about five minutes.  During this time--walk away.  Don't touch the machine.  If you do, you'll ruin the formatter, and you'll be stuck with a worthless machine.
  10. The machine will reboot, and your error will be gone.

That's it.
